Foilists' Gear Repair Guide
Dealing with a Constant White Light
"I’m hooked up to the scoring machine, and my white light stays on."
There are lots of reasons why this happens, so first, let’s figure out which piece of equipment is broken. Let's start with your foil and work backwards until the white light stops.
To do this, you have two options:
-
Replace your foil with a different foil, preferably one you’re sure works.
Often an easy fix, but sometimes the replacement foil is also broken, in which case you’re back to square one.
-
Short out your body cord.
What to do: Unplug your body cord and connect the B and C lines with something conductive, such as the guard of your foil or a screwdriver.
"What does that mean? How do I do that?"
Now that your body cord is shorted out, is your white light still on?
"Yes, the white light is still on when I ground out my body cord."
"No, the white light stopped."
Note: If something breaks in the middle of a tournament bout, don’t fiddle around with your gear. Let the referee inspect your gear first, otherwise the referee could assume that you broke something during your fiddling instead of during the fencing.
